Measure for sheet vinyl in kitchens, bathrooms, toilets, utility rooms and hallways. Record the full shape, then let us check the roll width, fitting allowance and preparation.
Singh Carpet Fitters supplies and fits vinyl across West Bromwich, Wednesbury, Great Barr, Walsall, Tipton, Bilston, Handsworth and Sutton Coldfield.
1. Start with a labelled sketch
- Use a tape measure and record sizes in metres: 245 cm = 2.45 m.
- Draw the floor outline, doors, bays, alcoves and fixed fittings. Mark exactly where you want the vinyl to finish.
- Measure the greatest length and width of the floor to be covered, including doorway and appliance recesses where relevant. Check at more than one point.
- Label every side of an irregular room. Take a separate measurement for each recess and mark its position.
- Send the actual measurements before fitting allowance. Measure twice and flag any inaccessible area.
This guide is for sheet vinyl supplied from a roll. LVT and SPC tiles or planks need a product-specific pack calculation; ask us to check the selected range.
2. Kitchens: units, islands & appliance bays
- Measure the open floor and each area to be covered beneath a fridge, cooker, washing machine or dishwasher. Mark the width and depth of those bays.
- Show fixed units, an island, pipes and any projecting boxing. Tell us whether the units are staying and whether the kitchen is being replaced.
- Confirm how the vinyl should finish at plinths, door thresholds and adjoining rooms. We will discuss appliance access and whether removal or refitting needs arranging.
- Do not order only the net area left after subtracting units or an island. A sheet may need to span a larger rectangle before it is trimmed to shape.
3. Bathrooms, toilets & cloakrooms
Mark the bath or shower tray, toilet, basin pedestal, vanity unit, pipes and boxing. Include the doorway recess to the agreed flooring finish beneath the closed door. Send photos showing the floor around and behind the fittings.
Tell us whether the fixtures will stay in place or be removed before fitting. We will confirm the cutting plan and whether any plumbing arrangements are required.
A bathroom floor is not automatically a wet-room floor. Water-resistant vinyl does not by itself make the whole installation watertight. For a level-access shower or wet room, ask us about a suitable flooring and sealing system before choosing standard domestic sheet vinyl.
4. Utility rooms, halls & L-shaped spaces
Draw the full outline and measure each passage, return, doorway and appliance recess. For connected rooms, mark where the vinyl should continue and where a door bar or join could sit.
You can divide the drawing into rectangles to understand the floor area, but do not use that total alone as the sheet order. We need the overall dimensions and layout to work out the roll cuts.
5. Roll widths, fitting allowance & patterns
Available roll widths vary by range. The chosen width must cover the room in the planned direction, including the agreed fitting allowance. We also check the direction and repeat of wood, tile, herringbone or patterned designs before planning cuts and joins.
The area of vinyl supplied can be larger than the floor area. These examples add 10 cm in total to each measured dimension for illustration. The actual allowance and any pattern matching must be confirmed for your room and product.
| Measurement | Kitchen | Bathroom |
|---|---|---|
| Actual length × width | 3.20 × 2.40 m | 2.20 × 1.70 m |
| Floor area | 7.68 m² | 3.74 m² |
| With example allowance | 3.30 × 2.50 m | 2.30 × 1.80 m |
| Illustrative roll width | 3 m | 2 m |
| Cut length | 3.30 m | 2.30 m |
| Vinyl supplied | 9.90 m² | 4.60 m² |
These widths are examples, not a promise of availability. A room exactly as wide as a nominal roll still needs its fitting allowance checked. Do not add the same allowance twice if it is already included in your estimate. We confirm joins and pattern alignment before cutting.
6. Check preparation and finishing
Sheet vinyl needs an appropriately smooth, dry, clean and sound base. Tell us about old tiles, grout lines, loose boards, uneven areas or damp. These may need preparation so they do not show through or affect the new floor.
Do not assume that carpet or laminate underlay is suitable beneath sheet vinyl. We will check the selected product, subfloor, fixing method and any moisture treatment needed. Tell us if there is underfloor heating so compatibility can be confirmed.
Include door bars, perimeter finishes, appliance clearance, old-floor removal and furniture moving in your request. Vinyl, fitting and any floor preparation are confirmed separately in your quotation.
7. Send us these details
- Your postcode and which rooms need vinyl.
- A labelled sketch with actual dimensions, doorway recesses and the intended flooring edges.
- Photos of the floor, kitchen units, appliances and bathroom fittings.
- The vinyl range and design, if chosen, and your preferred pattern direction.
- Any inaccessible areas, connected rooms, suspected damp or uneven flooring.
- Whether appliances, sanitaryware or units will stay in place, and what removal or refitting has been arranged.
Use your measurements for an initial estimate. Let us check the final roll cuts and fitting plan before the vinyl is cut.
